Hey guys! Just thought I’d briefly introduce myself as sports nutrition advocate of GSEMS. I’m currently 2/3rds of the way through my Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics. I’ve been heavily involved in the sporting world for years, however delved deeper by becoming a personal trainer three years ago. I’m all about a balanced diet and adhering to the diverse requirements of different individuals.
WHY SPORTS NUTRITION???
Should I have a vegan? Keto? Or McDonalds diet?
Growing up in the world of sports I found myself become extremely competitive and wanting to win every race that I’d part take in. Hours of training, nutritious eating and recovery were put towards each day to best condition myself for every competition. I understood it. I understood why you had to train. I understood why you needed to recover. But what I didn’t understand was how my food affected my performance. Food is fuel, right? Why was I not allowed to eat a big Mac and large chips as my post training feed?
Between Mum, Dad, my coach and teachers it was embedded into me that a healthy diet was best for my performance. But what is a healthy diet? And why does it make it better? Questions I found myself pondering the further I advanced into my sporting career. So I explored the most in depth research an adolescent of the 21st century knows; youtube. Where an influx of vegan, keto, intermittent fasting, macro counting, and every other diet invaded my news feed. Little to say I was overwhelmed and under prepared for the confusion it left myself and the people around me in. I went through a three-year rampage endorsing my new diets, being quick to judge those whom didn’t follow it. In the end finding myself more confused than when I started. My passion for a healthy diet grew immensely over this time, finally understanding the benefits but still not knowing what the “perfect diet” was. Bringing me to now, where I’m halfway through my Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics degree and can conclude that one size does not fit all. Each individual is incredibly different to what they require and prefer within the nutrition realm and advise from freelancing youtubers is definitely not the most credible. As for my diet, it’s back to the basics and eating the food pyramid to fuel my body.
Looking forward to meeting and working with you all and excited to start providing scientific evidence with you all and continue learning along the way.
Hanah
