I was recently asked – “what is the healthiest vegetable” to which I had no answer. Health in the scientific dictionary is defined as the state of being free from illness or injury. In a society where we are very critical upon ourselves, it’s hard to imagine that we are ever at optimum health. Many people claim after a weekend of enjoying alcoholic beverages or indulging on calorie dense foods that they are no longer healthy. Often preaching on the following Monday, that they’re ready to kick start their “health kick”. When in retrospect that is life, they are healthy by definition however just not at optimum health for their own unique requirements.

Now back to “the healthiest vegetable”, I don’t believe there is one as each individuals requirements are different and no one vegetable will provide the sufficient nutrients to suit everyone’s needs. To put this into perspective we must encounter allergies, intolerance's, genetic mutations, personal preferences and the individuals daily habits to consider their nutritional requirements. Second to this, one persons requirements are going to be extremely different to the next person. Thirdly, the body requires an abundance of vitamins and minerals that are found in a diverse range of vegetables. To put it simply, not one vegetable is going to tick all your boxes to reach optimum health.

Too many people are trying to find a quick fix to achieving their best self. However, we must understand that it’s a journey, just like working up the ladder to your ultimate career position, we must also take gradual steps everyday to achieve our “healthiest self”. I encourage bringing it back to the basics, where you’re consuming 5 different vegetables and 2 different fruits daily. This will fuel our bodies in sufficient ways to achieve our own unique healthiest self. Nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated and there will never be one answer that fits all, find what works for you and gradually work at it each day. Allow yourself to fall in love with the healthiest version of you.
